Love, Handfasting, and a Riverbank Promise: Tawnee & Steven’s Intimate Medina River Wedding
Love, Handfasting, and a Riverbank Promise: Tawnee & Steven’s Intimate Medina River Wedding
Some weddings are grand productions with hundreds of guests, elaborate timelines, and dance floors packed until midnight.
And then there are weddings like Tawnee and Steven's.
The kind that remind you exactly what a wedding is supposed to be about.
No distractions. No pressure. No performance.
Just love.
On a warm afternoon at the beautiful Medina River Natural Area in San Antonio, Tawnee and Steven stood together beneath the trees, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature, and promised forever to one another.
As an officiant, I have the privilege of witnessing all kinds of weddings. Every ceremony is special in its own way, but there is something particularly powerful about an intimate elopement. When there are only a handful of people present, every word carries a little more weight. Every glance means a little more. Every promise feels deeply personal.
And that was exactly the atmosphere Tawnee and Steven created.
One of the things I spoke about during their ceremony was the reality that love rarely arrives in perfect, uncomplicated ways.
Real love is shaped by life.
It is shaped by the lessons we learn, the challenges we survive, the healing we experience, and the hope we continue to carry forward.
Tawnee and Steven stood before one another not as two people searching for completion, but as two people who had already lived enough life to understand what commitment truly means.
They understand resilience.
They understand responsibility.
And most importantly, they understand the value of choosing one another.
Because that is what marriage is.
Not a single decision made on one beautiful afternoon.
A choice made over and over again throughout a lifetime.
A Blended Family Built on Love
Although their children were not physically present during the ceremony, they were very much part of the day.
When two people with children marry, they are creating something larger than a traditional marriage. They are joining families, histories, traditions, and dreams.
Blended families require patience.
They require understanding.
They require grace.
Most of all, they require love.
Tawnee and Steven's ceremony acknowledged that truth. Their marriage is not simply the union of two individuals. It is the creation of a new family story, one built on trust, laughter, support, and commitment.
Watching them together, it was easy to see that they are ready for that journey.

A Meaningful Handfasting Ceremony
One of the most beautiful moments of the day was their handfasting ceremony.
Handfasting is an ancient tradition that symbolizes two lives being bound together in love and partnership. While many couples exchange rings, handfasting adds an additional visual and emotional representation of unity.
As their hands were joined and wrapped with ceremonial cords, we reflected on what those hands would mean to one another throughout their lives.
The hands that would build dreams together.
The hands that would provide comfort during difficult times.
The hands that would wipe away tears.
The hands that would help hold their family together.
The hands that would continue reaching for one another, even decades from now.
Standing beside the river, surrounded by towering trees and filtered sunlight, the symbolism felt especially fitting. Nature itself seemed to pause and witness the promises being made.
The Rings and the Promise

Simple.
Meaningful.
Timeless.
As each placed a ring on the other's finger, they repeated a vow that perfectly captured the heart of marriage:
"Today and always, I choose you."
I love those words because they strip away all the complexity and get to the very center of what lasting love requires.
Choosing one another.
Not just on wedding days.
Not just during easy seasons.
But every day.
Through celebrations and setbacks. Through laughter and tears. Through all of life's ever-changing chapters.
The Kiss That Said Everything
After their vows were spoken, their rings exchanged, and their promises made, it was finally time.
"Tawnee and Steven, by the authority entrusted to me, it is my honor and joy to pronounce you married."
And then came that beautiful first kiss.
The kind of kiss that instantly tells everyone watching that these two people are exactly where they are meant to be.
The joy on their faces afterward was impossible to miss.
There was laughter.
There were hugs.
There were smiles that seemed incapable of leaving their faces.
And honestly, those are some of my favorite moments as an officiant. The ceremony may be complete, but the marriage is just beginning.
Why Medina River Natural Area Is Perfect for an Elopement
I've performed many ceremonies throughout San Antonio, and Medina River Natural Area continues to be one of my favorite hidden gems for intimate weddings.
The natural beauty creates a peaceful backdrop that requires very little decoration because nature has already done the work.
The river provides a calming presence.
The trees create a sense of privacy.
The setting encourages couples to slow down, breathe, and focus on what truly matters.
For couples who want a wedding that feels authentic, personal, and connected to nature, it is difficult to imagine a more fitting location.
A Wedding That Felt Authentically Them
What I loved most about Tawnee and Steven's wedding was how unapologetically true it was to who they are.
There were no expectations to meet.
No traditions followed simply because "that's how it's done."
Every choice reflected them.
Their intimate guest count.
Their beautiful dark attire.
Their meaningful handfasting ceremony.
Their decision to exchange vows beside the river.
Their focus on connection rather than spectacle.
The result was a wedding day that felt genuine from beginning to end.
And those are often the weddings people remember most.
Congratulations, Tawnee & Steven
Tawnee and Steven, thank you for allowing me to be part of such a meaningful day.
It was an honor to stand beside you at the Medina River, witness your promises, and officially pronounce you married.
May your marriage be filled with laughter during the easy days, strength during the difficult ones, and a lifetime of reaching for each other's hand.
Because after everything I witnessed that day, one thing is abundantly clear:
You have found your person.
And that is always worth celebrating.
